I read in some romance writing book that the romance world refers to Danielle Steel's book as soap operas, not romances. At the bookstore that I work, we put her earlier works in romance, but the books that she's published within the last 8 years are shelved in the general fiction section. Yes, the romance world in the 70s and early 80s (and earlier) were filled with pirates/Indian Brave/Highwayman kidnapping the innocent heroine ... the covers were filled with Fabio ripping the clothes off these women. But there is so much more to romances today. The women are Police officers, spies, carpenters, lawyers, soldiers, scientists, and believe me, they wouldn't let anybody just walk up and rip their bodices. Sheesh.
